I choose to analyze Peter Campus’ Three Transitions. In this video are three different unique sections all comprising of techniques that create illusions. In the first transition, Campus stands in front of wall with his back to the viewer. The other side of the wall is shown through the back of campus’ body, as the video progresses it shows Campus cutting through, disappearing and reappearing, and the taping the aforementioned gap back up. At first it is quite hard to understand what is going on and it requires much further observation, revealing it to be rather shocking and creepy. The second video shows Campus slowly erasing parts of his face by rubbing it off. This then reveals another layer underneath, to another view of his face this team juxtaposed against a different colored background. The last transition shows Campus holding a piece of paper up to him, reflecting back his face. He then lights the paper on fire and it begins to burn away until nothing is left, slowly obliterating his own image. Campus’ piece is quite revolutionary and experimental incorporating new green screen technology. Each transition has a unique meaning, displaying his creativity and ability to manipulate camera technology. Each transition incorporates the body to signify a sort of rebirth within oneself, it creates an intriguing video in which its variability and versatility of its meaning and purpose truly shine through.
